Heitman specialises in military writing and received his first degree from the University of Cape Town and a further degree in military studies at King’s College, London. He’s written many articles for publications in the US, UK, Germany and his native South Africa.

The book covers the history and context of the South African defense force from inception to 1985.   It includes weaponry, force management and training etc.  A chapter deals with South Africa’s involvement in the World Wars as well as the Korean war.  How this history informed the war against SWAPO in Anglo in 1974.

It also discusses that as a result of the isolation of the apartheid government a number of weapons were developed by SADF as the SA government were unable to purchase arms.
