“Definitive reference” is overstated, but this is an accurately written and handsomely illustrated survey of the world’s birds. It is in three sections: a short summary of basic bird biology; an illustrated catalog of about 1200 species representing all living orders and families; and a checklist of all 9300-plus currently recognized species. Both the catalog and the checklist use standard taxonomic arrangement. The entries in the catalog, the heart of the book, include name, range, habitat, size and a concise but clear and not overly technical account of the birds’ biology; all species are illustrated in color. There is an index of names. Recommended as a useful, though not essential, addition to popular science collections.
